Gary Smith says everyone at Tamworth ‘from the top to the bottom’ is relishing a long FA Cup run this season.

The Lambs have had a chequered relationship with the famous competition in recent years and have failed to reach the first round proper for the past seven seasons.

A decade ago, Tamworth booked a memorable third round trip to Goodison Park to take on Everton.

Premier League bright lights aside, Smith’s side get their FA Cup campaign back underway against Alvechurch a week on Saturday.

And Smith reckons a cup run is something everyone at the club would welcome with open arms – the message is simple – dare to dream.

“It’s a home draw with a team from our division. They’re going well under Ian Long and he’s got a good crop of youngsters there,” Smith said.

“Everybody knows the importance of the FA Cup and what it can do, not only for the players, but the revenue it can bring in for the club as well. Being at home doesn’t mean it’s going to be an easy game.

“It would be brilliant for Tamworth to have a good cup run. Playing in those big games against the biggest sides is an occasion and a feeling nobody can take away from you.

“The FA Cup holds lots of memories for me and it makes it a great competition to be going into. It can throw up some big games and I’ve been there as a player, but I would love to be involved in them as a manager as well.

“It would give me another feather in the cap as they say, and I would love for the players to put together a good run.

“Anything is possible. We’ve seen Non-League sides get to the fifth round before. It’s a competition that everyone at the club from top to bottom wants to play in and wants to do well in for obvious reasons.”
