‘Never say never’ – Smith won’t rule out further additions as Mikey Taylor returns

Gary Smith reckons Tamworth have done what any club should have done by snapping up prolific striker Mikey Taylor.

The Lambs bagged the Bromsgrove frontman ahead of what promises to be a huge season for the club.

Taylor found a rich vein of form at the Rouslers, notching 31 times in 35 games.

And Smith, a prolific striker himself as a Tamworth player, is rubbing his hands together at what can be achieved this season – but he admits it won’t be as easy as some are expecting.

“The league is going to be very competitive,” he said. “A lot of teams are putting squads together, but I know a lot are still building behind the scenes.

“Most of the business we have done, we’ve done quietly and got just got on with it.

“Everyone is trying to put a strong squad together. It’s going to be tough and be competitive, but I look forward to that challenge and hopefully we’ll rise to the occasions when the time comes.

“We’re pretty close to being done now. There are a couple of players floating around that we are interested in. We need to have a discussion with Thomas Baillie to see if I can get him to work some magic and see if we’re able to get one more marquee signing over the line, who knows.

“We’re well on our way anyway and we’re quite happy with the business we’ve done up to now. Never say never when it comes to signings.

“It takes a lot of planning and a lot of discussions to get things organised properly and I think the things we’ve implemented over the time we’ve been here have been positive ones. Everybody just wants the best for the football club and we’re all working with that same goal in mind.”

Taylor was in fine form for Bromsgrove Sporting in the past two seasons, scoring 31 goals in 35 games, something Smith says adds another level to their attacking options.

“When a player of his stature and experience and ability becomes available, most managers would be interested,” Smith said.

“He scores goals and every club needs a goalscorer because if you’ve got one, you’ve got more of a chance of winning football matches. That’s not putting down any other goalscorers we’ve got at the club, but this just adds to what we’ve already got.

“It’s a great signing for us and again, it gives us fantastic options up front as well with the players we’ve already got. It makes it more interesting and more exciting.”
