Tamworth set for squad talks as Smith reveals plans for new season

Tamworth will begin building their squad for the new season in the coming weeks after a “successful” meeting between the club’s board and management team yesterday evening.

The Lambs’ joint boss Gary Smith says, following the meeting, planning for next season can move up a notch.

A number of the previous season’s squad are set to stay at the club.

With the Southern League season set to start on August 14, Smith confirmed previously that Tamworth wouldn’t be going to early with pre-season, with training and friendlies expected to start in June.

Ahead of that, Smith is hoping to get everything in place sooner rather than later.

“We had a successful meeting last night,” he said.

“We’d already started planning anyway in terms of what we want to do but we’re full steam ahead.

“We’ll start to talk to players and get the ones we want. Hopefully we can get all that business tied up as soon as possible – I’d rather go into the start of pre-season knowing we’ve secured who we want to secure.

“That’s the remit now so we’re going to go and do what we have to do. However, nothing is black and white with any player. We still need to speak to all the players and find out if they’re still comfortable and happy staying at the club.

“[The squad] may be similar but you may also find there will be a few new players in there.”

As part of the Government’s road-map to the easing of lockdown, fans will be permitted into football stadiums from May 17.

While nothing is planned for that date, Smith reckons the fans won’t be disappointed by what is to come ahead of the new season.

“We may put something on in June,” Smith said.

“I can’t say for sure but we might have an open training session so the fans can come in and see how we do things. If the fans can come in and have a look, it’s a great thing to see the work that goes on behind-the-scenes.

“We’ve got a few friendlies in the pipeline. We want to make sure we pick some fantastic teams to come down to The Lamb to regenerate the football club.

“We’re looking at some big friendlies against some high-profile sides.

“As we get further down into the planning, things will be announced, the fans won’t be kept in the dark.”
