Smith: Brackley Win Was Reward For Hard Pre-Season Graft

Gary Smith says Tamworth’s win against Brackley Town in the Lambs’ penultimate pre-season game was reward for their hard work in training – but added his side are still a work in progress.

Tamworth saw off the National League North side on Tuesday evening courtesy of goals from Liam Bateman and Shaquille McDonald either side of Harry Flowers’ goal for the visitors.

And while he was pleased with result, Smith told Lambs Media he was even happier they were starting to see the fruits of their labour.

“We’ve been putting the work in the past three or four weeks with the boys and they’ve been turning up the pace in the training sessions,” he said.

“Tonight, was the culmination of that. You see the work rate and the desire from the players – they had an intensity that we probably haven’t had in previous games.

“We’re moving in the right direction but we’re still a work in progress. I’ll keep saying that until we start on the 19th and hopefully by then we’ll have got it right.”

Tamworth made five changes from the defeat to Matlock Town and one of those newcomers to the line-up opening the scoring on the half-hour mark.

Dexter Walters shrugged off two defenders on the left before whipping in a deep cross that the Brackley defenders couldn’t deal with.

The ball fell to Bateman who lashed a shot over the keeper and into the top corner on the volley.

Ten minutes later, defender Flowers drew an point-blank save from Jas Singh but after evading his marker from the resulting corner, the Saints’ man nodded them level.

After the break, Ryan Beswick’s introduction was justified when he swung in a corner for McDonald to volley home from close in to restore the home side’s lead.

Tyrell Waite could have added a second after racing beyond the back line, but a smart save denied him.

Flowers and Ash Chambers also had half chances to equalise again but neither really threatened Singh’s goal in truth.
