QUIZ: How Well Do You Know Your Euros?

We might have more chance of seeing Christmas before football gets back underway under the coronavirus cloud.

Football has made way for quizzing to become the number one sport in England as people scramble for a speckle of normality, albeit through Zoom calls and Face Time.

I’ve compiled a quiz of the past few European Championships, starting with Euro 2000 through to the last tournament in 2016.

QUESTION 1 | Euro 2000: France won it, but who co-hosted the tournament?
Belgium and The Netherlands
CORRECT! The final was held in Rotterdam at De Kuip, home of Feyenoord.
Spain and Portugal

QUESTION 2 | Euro 2004: Which two teams did England beat in Group B to qualify for the knockout stages?
Croatia and Switzerland
CORRECT! The Three Lions beat Switzerland 3-0 before seeing off Croatia 4-2 a few days later.

WRONG! England lost their opening game to France having been winning until the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

QUESTION 3 | Euro 2008: Co-hosts Austria made their European Championships debut in ’08 – who else did?
CORRECT! Simply, 2008 was the first time the Poles appeared in the tournament.
WRONG! After beating the odds to win the previous tournament, Greece not only appeared, but were reigning champions.
WRONG! Turkey made their first European Championships appearance in 1996.

QUESTION 4 | Euro 2012: Which England player had his penalty saved by Gianluigi Buffon during the Three Lions’ quarter-final penalty shootout loss to Italy?
Ashley Cole
CORRECT! Cole’s spot-kick was saved by Buffon – the miss proved to be crucial as Alessandro Diamanti stepped up next to win it for the Italians.
Ashley Young
WRONG! Young missed his penalty but hit the bar after Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard had scored theirs.
Joleon Lescott
WRONG! Lescott didn’t take a penalty in the shootout.

QUESTION 5 | Euro 2016: Which player finished as top-scorer in the competition?
Antoine Griezmann
CORRECT! The Frenchman ended the tournament with six goals to bag the Golden Boot.
Alvaro Morata
WRONG! Morata was one of a few players to hit three goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo
WRONG! CR7 could only manage three goals.

QUESTION 6 | Euro 2000: Who scored the golden goal winner for France in the final?
David Trezeguet
CORRECT! Trezeguet came off the bench to hit the decider after Sylvain Wiltord had forced extra-time late on.
Thierry Henry
WRONG! Thierry Henry didn’t find the net despite playing the whole game.
Christophe Dugarry
WRONG! Dugarry started the match but was replaced by Wiltord just before the hour mark.

QUESTION 7 | Euro 2004: Greece defied all the odds to stun Portugal and win the tournament – who scored the winning goal?

CORRECT! Charisteas helped the Greeks do the unthinkable and stun an expectant home crowd in Lisbon, scoring the only goal of the game after 57 minutes.

CORRECT! Spain got their campaign off to a perfect start with a resounding 4-1 win over Russia – Cesc Fabregas adding the gloss after Villa’s hat-trick.
WRONG! Just the one in this game although it was a last-gasp winner.
WRONG! Villa didn’t score in this one.

QUESTION 9 | Euro 2012: Only one player in the ‘Team of the Tournament’ didn’t play in the knockout stages – who was it?
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
CORRECT! Who else? Zlatan joined others including Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta in the Team of the Tournament despite Sweden failing to get out of their group.
Robert Lewandowski
WRONG! Lewandowski hit just one goal as co-hosts Poland crashed out of the tournament without winning a game.
Robin Van Persie
WRONG! RVP got one of The Netherlands’ two goals in the tournament as they crashed out, losing all three of their group games.

QUESTION 10 | Euro 2016: Portugal triumphed over France in the final – who became the youngest player to win the competition in the process?
Renato Sanches
CORRECT! Aged just 18, Sanches became the youngest player ever to win a European Championships final as Portugal claimed their first major trophy.
Adrien Silva
WRONG! He did help Portugal win the tournament but Sanches was much younger.

WRONG! Played a part in their run to the final but is older than Sanches.
